Monthly Theme – Follow Jesus, we are thankful for Jesus

Key Verse:“’Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will make you fishers of men’” (Mark 1:17)

Our hope is for our kids to believe that: Jesus deserves our worship

(Open the bible and read to your child Matthew 2:1-12) God wanted the world to know that his son was born. To do this he placed a star in the sky so the wise men, who are called magi, could find Him. They magi went to Herod to ask him where this boy named Jesus was. Now Herod was a king who was threatened by the birth of Jesus, because Jesus was called “the King of the Jews”. Because of this, Herod lied to the Magi and told them to find Jesus so he too could worship Him. So the magi went out and found Jesus in Bethlehem. They were overjoyed and gave him expensive gifts, because this Jesus was the savior of the world. The magi had a dream telling them not to go back to Jerusalem, because Herod was an evil king and did not want to worship Jesus.

(This is an opportunity for you to ask some questions and to share your thoughts) Parents: Talk about a struggle you might have (or once had) to keep Jesus first in your life. Perhaps washing your brand-new car consumes all your free time. Or maybe you spend too much time focusing on your personal appearance. Be open and honest in your evaluation, and allow your children to see what different types of worship can look like. Then talk with your family about ways you can worship Jesus both one-on-one and in a family setting. Encourage your family members to have at least one personal worship time this week.

Activity/Challenge for Families:
This week make a fun video with the family (most smart phones nowadays will do quality video). Write a letter, poem, or song of worship to Jesus and recite or perform it in front of the camera. God made laughter and has a sense of humor so free yourselves up and enjoy! Those who are brave can post the video on youtube (if you don’t know how ask your kids). Make sure you post a link on the Valley Next Gen Ministry Facebook Page!
