Monthly Theme – Follow Jesus, we are thankful for Jesus

Key Verse:“’Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will make you fishers of men’” (Mark 1:17)

Our hope is for our kids to believe that: God sent Jesus

(Open the bible and read to your child Mark 1:4-11) It’s amazing that Jesus decided to get baptized at the start of his ministry here on Earth. In the story we see that all three members of the Holy Trinity are represented. Jesus was being baptized,   God spoke to His son in a voice from heaven, and the dove is the Holy Spirit descending on Jesus. The dove represents both purity and gentleness, which is what Jesus is all about. Prior to Jesus, the message of repentance was a harsh one, calling for people to turn away from their sins and to change their behavior. However, Jesus came to die for us while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8). We can rejoice to know that God sent Jesus to die for us, giving us the message of love, so that we can spend eternity with Him.

(This is an opportunity for you to ask some questions and to share your thoughts) Parents: Tell your children about your great love for them. Talk about how you felt the first time you saw each child. Let your children know how much you value each of them individually, and share some things that make them uniquely special to you. Then talk about how much greater God’s love is. God loved each of us so much that he sent his one and only son to die for us so we can live with him forever. Encourage your children to let you know when they want to begin a relationship with Jesus – if they haven’t done so yet.

Activity/Challenge for Families:
If we stop to think about it, we all have things we believe in, things we’ve learned to trust through experience, It’s time to do a family “I Believe List!” Give everyone in your family a piece of paper and a crayon or pencil. Ask all family members to list one or more things they believe are true from the following categories: home, family, television, friends, church, and Jesus. Then go through the things family members came up with, and discuss the difference between the things that are true and things that are not so true.
