Monthly Theme – Follow Jesus, we are thankful for Jesus

Key Verse:“’Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will make you fishers of men’” (Mark 1:17)

Our hope is for our kids to: Follow Jesus

(Open the bible and read to your child John 1:43-51) Jesus had a plan when He came to Earth in the form of a man. He wanted to save us from sin, but to make it known; he needed disciples to follow him. These disciples would go and make more disciples, and then those disciples would make more disciples and so on. As a disciple you would tell everyone about God’s love for us, a love so strong that he sent his only son Jesus, to die on the cross for our sins so that we may spend an eternity with Him. The first disciples were fisherman named Simon, Andrew, James, and John. They were likely followers of John the Baptist, but found it a privilege to follow Jesus, so they left their business to their father and followed Jesus.

(This is an opportunity for you to ask some questions and to share your thoughts)
Parents read Matthew 10:37-39 and Matthew 16:24-26 as a family. Talk about why you think Jesus told his disciples twice to take up the cross and follow him. Together make a list of specific things your family does to follow Jesus. Talk about ways you can invite others to follow Jesus.

Activity/Challenge for Families:
Parents, plan a time when you can take the family on a special trip. Maybe it’s a visit to Cold Stone or a favorite place the kids enjoy going to. Try to time it when everyone is busy playing, watching TV, or doing a favorite activity. At that time tell everyone to “follow you” by getting in the car (or walking) to your destination. Offer no other details, make it a surprise! While you are enjoying your time together discuss how they felt not knowing where they were going. Ask why they decided to go with you? (authority of parent, curiosity, etc). Discuss how it must have felt for the disciples of Jesus and why they chose to follow Him.
