Monthly Theme – Jesus Cares For Us

Key Verse:“He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy” (Titus 3:5a)

Our hope is for our kids to believe that: We should turn to Jesus when we’re afraid

(Open the bible and read to your child Mark 4:35-41) To get to the other side of Galilee was a very difficult task. The boats that they traveled in were small fishing boats, which were not made for this type of journey. Also, this lake often had sudden storms that would turn it into a violent sea! Many of the disciples were expert fisherman, so they knew how to handle a situation like this. So we can tell that they were desperate because they woke up Jesus with screams of terror. They were stunned that Jesus was calm while the storm raged on and rocked the small boat. However, Jesus is in control of everything, so we know that when we are afraid Jesus is calm and in control. When Jesus awoke he told the storm and the sea to calm down, and it did! The disciples were amazed that the weather would listen to Jesus. They saw Jesus heal the sick and blind, but never have they seen anything of this magnitude. Even today with our medical knowledge and technology, we cannot control the weather. Only God can do this. When we are in a bad situation, the right response is to turn to Jesus.

(This is an opportunity for you to ask some questions and to share your thoughts) Parents: Talk about a time you or a family member or your family felt afraid. Maybe your child struggled with being afraid of the dark. Or perhaps you were scared when your child wandered off in a store. Then talk about the following questions: What is a fear you can ask God to help you with right now? How can you give a fear to God? What difference does it make to know that God will take care of us?

Activity/Challenge for Families:
Ask everyone in the family to rank the following pets by how likely they are to follow you if you walk down the street: dog, cat, rabbit, goldfish, hamster, mouse, python. If you have a pet, add your pet to the list too. If you think it’s very likely, give the animal a “10”. If you think it’s totally unlikely, give the animal a “1”. Now rank yourself by how likely you are to follow Jesus: Are you a “10” or a “1” or somewhere in between?
