Monthly Theme – God sent Jesus to save us

Key Verse:“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life”
(John 3:16)

Our hope is for our kids to believe that: There is no shame in following Jesus

Read:
(Open the bible and read to your child Mark 8:31-38) The message Jesus was giving his disciples in this passage was not only difficult for them to hear, but it is also difficult for us to hear. Jesus is telling his disciples that bad things are going to happen to him. Peter, one of the disciples really close to Jesus began to argue with Jesus saying that this will never happen. Jesus had to explain to Peter that these things are necessary in order for us to be with him forever. Jesus continues to say following him may not be easy, but we can be brave because Jesus was brave for us. When we try to be bold and brave by ourselves we will lose, however, if we are bold and brave with Jesus we shall win, because Jesus has won. This is why we do not need to ashamed of following Christ. The things we could gain here on earth are nothing compared to the things we can gain forever. What we gain on earth will decay, perish, get old, and eventually disappear, but what we gain with Jesus, will last for eternity.

Share:
(This is an opportunity for you to ask some questions and to share your thoughts) Parents: Talk about a time you were scared or ashamed to admit you are a Christian. Then share a time you were brave and bold to be a follower of Christ. Remind your kids that we can be bold and brave when we are following Jesus. It’s not always easy, and you might not always make the right choices, but you can always know that God loves us without us having to do anything. God doesn’t keep a record of our wrongs and is always there for us. Encourage your kids to embrace God’s grace every day. Challenge and encourage your kids in that area throughout the week.

Activity/Challenge for Families:
This week make a special treat with your kid(s). Encourage your child to follow your directions during the process. Have your child help with any mixing, pouring, and baking. Tell your child that you’re proud that he or she followed your directions well. Say that we make Jesus happy when we follow him, too!
