Monthly Theme – God sent Jesus to save us

Key Verse:“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life”
(John 3:16)

Our hope is for our kids to believe that: God sent Jesus to save us

(Open the bible and read to your child John 3:12-21) Nicodemus was part of the ruling council in Jerusalem, which means he was a very smart church leader. He came to Jesus at night because he wanted to know more about him, and also because he didn’t want people to think he was one of his followers. Nicodemus was confused on why God sent Jesus. Jesus explained in verse 16 that he came to save the world, that if you just believe in him you will have an eternal life with him and the father. Nicodemus wasn’t use to this message; he believed that if you do good things and all the right stuff God will accept you. In fact verse 17 clarifies it even more, that he didn’t come to keep track of your wrongs, but to give you a way to heaven, all without the requirements that Nicodemus thought you had to have. We can rejoice in knowing that God shows his love for us through his grace, and when we believe in Jesus we receive that grace.

(This is an opportunity for you to ask some questions and to share your thoughts) Parents: Talk about a time you or your family was in trouble or in danger. Share how you were saved from danger and who rescued you. Talk about how that situation was similar to or different from how Jesus provided a way to save us when he came to earth to die for our sin. Then talk with your kids about how they can know they will live forever with God in heaven. (Not sure how to do this? Check out some of the following verses: Romans 3:23; 5:8; 6:23; and 10:9.)

Activity/Challenge for Families:
This week play a game of “Tic-Tac-Toe Prayers” with your child(ren). On a piece of paper, draw a Tic-Tac-Toe grid. Take turns naming friends and family members who need Jesus in their lives. In each square of the grid, help your child write someone’s name, draw the person’s picture, or glue a photo of him or her. Using pennies for markers play a game of Tic-Tac-Toe, but each time you place a coin on someone’s picture, pray for that person personally to come to Jesus.
