Hot August Sundays

Key Verse: “But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you”
(Matthew 5:44)

Our hope is for our kids to know that: God help us be loyal friends even when it’s hard

(Open the bible and read to your child 1 Samuel 26:5-25) This passage tells the story of the second time David spares Saul’s life (see chapter 24 for the first). Here we see that David could have easily killed Saul, but instead showed mercy. When Saul learned that David had spared his life, he promised to stop his pursuit of him, something that he had promised before. We learn from Saul and David that there are two ways to deal with enemies. Saul pursued and deceived, while David constantly showed mercy. Saul was very jealous and wanted to seek revenge, while David waited for God to work things out according to his own timing.

(This is an opportunity for you to ask some questions and to share your thoughts) Parents: Talk about a time you sought revenge on someone you thought deserved it. Tell about how you felt and what the effects were on the other person and on you. Then contrast that story with a time you chose to forgive someone even when that person did something to hurt you. What effects did your forgiveness have on that person and on you? Discus with your children what happens in your life when you choose forgiveness over revenge. Encourage your family members to think of someone they need to forgive, and then ask them to share how they can demonstrate their forgiveness this week.

Activity/Challenge for Families:
Show some love for those who aren’t your friends by making a tasty treat to take to your class this week. Make cookies or cupcakes and decorate them. Then take them to your class. (Be sure to check first with your teacher for the best day to do this!) When you get to class with your treats, make a special point of personally giving one of the treats to someone in your class who isn’t your friend. You don’t need to tell anyone why you’re doing this, just show love to those who haven’t been nice to you and watch what happens!
