Key Verse: “Come and see what God has done, how awesome his works in man’s behalf!” –
(Psalms 66:5)

Our hope is for our kids to know that: Standing up for God means following him no matter what.

(Open the bible and read to your child Numbers 13:1-14:23) So it was time for the Israelites to take the land that God had given them. In preparation of this they sent spies into the land to see what kind of opposition they were facing. When the spies returned only Joshua and Caleb had faith that God could do what he said, the others exaggerated the reports of the size and strength of the lands inhabitants. God was angry at the Israelites but once again forgave them. Moses was able to talk with God and intercede for them (much like Christ intercedes for us). However, their actions resulted in consequences, and they were destined to walk in the desert for forty more years. Joshua and Caleb had enough faith in God that they stood firm even though it wasn’t the popular thing to do.

(This is an opportunity for you to ask some questions and to share your thoughts) Parents: Spend time with your kids looking through the Bible for someone who was a hero and stood up for God. What qualities did that hero live out that you’d like to adopt in your life? Maybe that person stood up for God through his or her actions despite life-threatening consequences, or perhaps that person listened to the Holy Spirit instead of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. Then, talk with your kids about areas where each of you need to make more of an effort to stand up for God.

Activity/Challenge for Families:
As a family look through an album of old family pictures. Look for pictures that depict times someone in the family stood up for someone else or was loyal to someone else. Maybe you’ll see a picture of an old friend that you stood up one time. Or maybe you’ll find a picture of a sports team in which members had to be loyal to each other and stick together in order to win. Then talk about times members in your family stood up for God or showed loyalty to God. Tell stories about those times. Then have each member of your family talk about times its hard to stand up for God. After everyone has shared, pray together for each person in your family. Ask God to give each of you courage to stand up for him everyday.
